General Care for Potted Herb Plants
LIGHT
Herbs require a minimum of 4-6 hours of sunlight a day, so it is best to locate herb pots on a window sill or patio with direct light, or under a fluorescent light if direct light cannot be achieved.
WATER
Use common sense when watering, and only water when required. If the top inch or more of the mix is dry then water it through until water is draining out of the bottom. If the pot is inside; check once a week, if the pot is outside; check more frequently (especially in summer). Remember each herb variety’s water requirements will be different, and the bigger the plant, generally the more water it will require.
FERTILISER
Herbs don’t require a lot of nutrition, and there is slow release already in the mix supplied, so be frugal with fertilising, and avoid overdoing it in order to produce the best results of a healthy and tasty herb.
POSITION
If transferring a herb pot from inside to outside or vice versa, remember to first acclimatise the plant for a few hours a day so it can adjust to the new light and temperature conditions.
GROWTH
To avoid straggly growth of your herb plant, pinch new growth off the end shoots periodically. This keeps the plant neat and compact and allows you to add herbs daily to your cooking requirements.
